The first problem is that shaping metal to a seat is a pain in the butt (try the veil, I'm here all week)
. The second problem was the cost in leather. It's high right now...just like everything else. The third problem is that I have no idea how to run a sewing machine. So, if you're keeping score that means that all I would actually do is cut and mold a piece of metal, buy some leather, make a pattern, and, after the leather was sewn, I would stretch it and fasten it to the seat pan with rivets.
Screw all that. Newbonneville.com had a seat almost identical to the one that I would build for myself for the mizerly sum of $374. All it was missing was cool graphics stamped into the leather (I was thinking "mexican sugar skull"). But, chances are that would annoy me later on and I would just want plain black leather. And to be fair, you can have them do just about anything you want. Provided you spend the dough and have time to wait. Nothing is impossible. It just costs more. Mine has a neat little horseshoe and star on the back. Cool.
Which brings me to the only hitch in the plan. I ordered this darn thing almost six weeks ago. The web site says to allow six to eight weeks for delivery on the custom jobs. Not the "supposed" stock seats. My numerous e-mails all got the same reply. Something about taking longer than expected, but they should have them soon. That song got old quick.
The wait was worth it though. the seat looks sexy as hell and fits the bike much better than my old seat. Installation is a breeze. Just remove the the stock seat, then remove the latch the seat attaches to with a 5/16 socket and an allen wrench. Finish off with a chrome or black solo seat bolt($17.95 in chrome $16.95 in black) that attaches to the channel left by the latch.
That's it. I'll try to post some pictures in the gallery this weekend.
