Many of you know that I can't seem to stop customizing my speedmaster (now I'm contemplating fork shroud removal and gator instalation, and I'm still looking for wire wheels to fit) And those of you who have seen my bike noticed that the seat (built from the stock one) was a bit wide, and I was never quite happy with the way the faux alligator stretched. So, I set out to build a new one. I'm talking from the seat pan up.

The first problem is that shaping metal to a seat is a pain in the butt (try the veil, I'm here all week) :har: . The second problem was the cost in leather. It's high right now...just like everything else. The third problem is that I have no idea how to run a sewing machine. So, if you're keeping score that means that all I would actually do is cut and mold a piece of metal, buy some leather, make a pattern, and, after the leather was sewn, I would stretch it and fasten it to the seat pan with rivets.

Screw all that. Newbonneville.com had a seat almost identical to the one that I would build for myself for the mizerly sum of $374. All it was missing was cool graphics stamped into the leather (I was thinking "mexican sugar skull"). But, chances are that would annoy me later on and I would just want plain black leather. And to be fair, you can have them do just about anything you want. Provided you spend the dough and have time to wait. Nothing is impossible. It just costs more. Mine has a neat little horseshoe and star on the back. Cool.

Which brings me to the only hitch in the plan. I ordered this darn thing almost six weeks ago. The web site says to allow six to eight weeks for delivery on the custom jobs. Not the "supposed" stock seats. My numerous e-mails all got the same reply. Something about taking longer than expected, but they should have them soon. That song got old quick.

The wait was worth it though. the seat looks sexy as hell and fits the bike much better than my old seat. Installation is a breeze. Just remove the the stock seat, then remove the latch the seat attaches to with a 5/16 socket and an allen wrench. Finish off with a chrome or black solo seat bolt($17.95 in chrome $16.95 in black) that attaches to the channel left by the latch.

That's it. I'll try to post some pictures in the gallery this weekend.

I put one picture on the galleries yesterday. I'll take some better ones this week if the sun comes out.

Update on the Low-Profile seat from newbonneville.com

It has wrecked my paint. The front of the seat has worn a spot my gas tank that goes down to the bare metal. Upon contacting newbonneville.com they told me to return the seat to the manufacturer. Then they sent me the disclaimer about how they are not responsible for damage to paint from any of the products they sell. They suggested that I did not test fit the part and that "improper intallation" was the culprit. It's a seat. With one bolt. And the bolt end is not the problem.

I understand that the problem is from the seat maker, and not the folks at newbonneville.com. but the part part is sold from them, and my reciept is to newbonneville.com and not a manufacturer in california. They are not going to stand by thier part in the least. I am putting pictures of the damage in the gallery. And I am taking my business elsewhere.

Had some similar experiences with chrome quality from them.

I'm a little pissed about it. I've spent a good chunk of change with them, and was planning on spending a good chunk more.

I'm just going to try and get everything from Britishcustoms.com. That was I can avoid giving newbonneville.com a single cent. it seems like everyhing they sell is from somebody else anyway. They're just a warehouse. I'll find it on thier site, and then get it direct from the manufacturer when i can
